Manchester City midfielder nets first career hat-trick as the United States defeat Colombia

Manchester City midfielder Sam Mewis netted a first senior career hat-trick as the United States defeated Colombia 4-0 at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida this morning.

The 28-year-old, who was recently crowned the US Soccer Female Player of the Year for 2020, netted her treble inside 47 minutes as an experienced American side eased to victory against a much-depleted Colombian outfit.

Mewis opened the scoring for The Stars and Stripes after just four minutes when she swept home a Megan Rapinoe pass from 16 yards before the midfielder headed in a second from a Carli Lloyd pass to give her side a comfortable two-goal lead at the break.

It took Mewis less than two minutes to complete her hat-trick in the second half as she sent Colombian goalkeeper Sandra Sepulveda the wrong way from the penalty spot.

A scintillating display from Mewis came to an end just after the hour when the player was replaced by club teammate Rose Lavelle who went on to play the remaining minutes of what was the first of two friendly matches against Colombia this week.

Mewis’ elder sister Kristie Mewis completed the scoring four minutes from time with veteran Lloyd providing another assist.

The second fixture against Colombia will take place at The Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida at midnight on Saturday.
