WEEKLY UPDATE: Bristol City Women Supporters’ Club #10

Welcome to the latest update from the Bristol City Women Supporters’ Club.

The week has literally been a damp squib for us Bristol City fans. A few of us made the trip to London to watch us play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and I got as far as Heathrow Airport on the National Express coach on the morning of the game before news filtered through that the match had been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Rather than enduring a wasted trip to the capital, another Vixens fan and myself decided to make a detour  across London to Kingston upon Thames to take in Chelsea’s fixture against West Ham United. It was a game where we were treated to a dazzling performance from Emma Hayes’ team as they hammered the East Londoners 8-0. I was particularly enthralled by Erin Cuthbert who was at her very best. Despite not going to London for what we intended for, a pleasant afternoon was had and it was good to meet with our good friends from Chelsea and West Ham United who wished us well in our fight to stay up,

I was sad to hear that Meaghan Sargeant and Elise Hughes’ seasons are over as both suffered Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries in the recent game against Liverpool. Everyone at the supporters club would like to thank Elise for her contribution during her short stay with us and we wish her well for the future as she returns to her parent club Everton.

This Sunday, we welcome Reading to the Stoke Gifford Stadium for our latest crunch FA Women’s Super League match. Despite losing all of our previous five league matches to The Royals, we got an enthralling 3-3 draw against them at The Madejski Stadium in November. Everyone who attended that fixture will remember the game for a long time, especially how we showed enormous character in coming back from two goals down on two occasions. Hopefully, memories from that game will inspire the players to go one better this time.

There is no let up because three days later, we travel to Manchester City and a couple of us are making the long midweek trip to The Academy Stadium to support the girls. I am personally looking forward to the game as it is one ground which I have never visited. I am also looking forward to seeing some of our good friends from the Manchester City Women Official Supporters’ Club who we have always had such a great relationship with. The fixture also has good memories for us as last season, we went 2-0 up before Steph Houghton saved a point for her team with a last minute wonder-goal. Here is hoping that we can finish the job off this time.

On top of selling our badges, this week we launched our first Bristol City Women Supporters’ Club polo shirt. These are reasonably priced at £15 including a specially designed embroidered badge.

I’ll be back again next week to talk about the weekend’s action which will hopefully see us move off the foot of the FA Women’s Super League table.
