Barmy Army members with Katie Zelem at Brighton & Hove Albion

WEEKLY UPDATE: Manchester United Barmy Army #7

Unfortunately, Wednesday’s match at Brighton & Hove Albion didn’t bring a return to winning ways for our girls.

It was a long train journey down to The People’s Pension Stadium in Crawley for our loyal fans which could not be rewarded with three points.

The game began with a feeling of hope and excitement in the air, as it took a mere 14 seconds for us to take the lead. Unfortunately for the hosts, a Lauren James cross took a huge deflection before the ball hit the post and cannoned off Albion goalkeeper Megan Walsh on it’s way to finding the back of the net. It was a very lucky goal for us which put us ahead, we just needed to capitalise on it. As much as the girls pushed to bag another, they instead managed to concede with Aileen Whelan heading in at the end of the first half. Neither team managed to break the deadlock in the second period and at full-time the result remained a rather disappointing 1-1 draw. Our travelling fans were left with much to ponder as we are beginning to slip into a string of bad results.

Following the game, the Barmy Army gave captain Katie Zelem a present to give to the newest member of the group, Emilia, goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain’s baby who was born the end of January. The captain also took the time to thank fans for travelling and stayed to take pictures. The Barmy Army also got Dutch star Jackie Groenen to sign a programme for one of our members Joanna who was due to come to the Chelsea game before it was called off through Storm Ciara.

We had no game at the weekend, so several members were going to make the trip Leicester City to see former United player Charlie Devlin play in their Women’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Reading. However, like many other games that day, it fell victim to storm Dennis and was postponed.

Our next game will take place against Everton on 23 February. You will need to make sure that you buy tickets in advance as ticket sales numbers have been capped and you will not be able to purchase tickets on the day. The fixture will take place at Everton’s new home ground at Walton Hall Park.

Looking forward to future event, members should to take note of our first AGM which will take place in the The Whistling Wren pub next to the ground after our fixture against Manchester City on the 29 March. Fans wishing to take part in our first meeting of the Barmy Army can sign up for a ticket by clicking here. We are going to discuss the Barmy Army going forward and all key issues regarding the group and what will come for the next 12 months.

We have also been contacted by The National Football Museum about the Strip! Talk; modern cult classics event. The event will take place on 27 February at 7pm and will feature a guest panel including our very own captain, Katie Zelem. Tickets are originally priced at £5.80 however you can purchase with discount code ‘KATIEZELEM’ to receive entry for just £2.80 per ticket, or for free if you are a Manchester resident. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.

All members of the Barmy Army are looking forward to our return to action on Sunday at Everton. We hope to see as many of you as possible there to support our girls.
