North-South divide leaves Durham with many miles to clock up to complete season

The North-South divide in the FA Women’s Championship means that Durham must travel over 1,700 miles to complete their season should the campaign resume this summer.

The season has been suspended until it is deemed safe for football to continue with the Coronavirus crisis having battered the UK during the last three weeks.

Some clubs in the FA Women’s Championship have as many as eight games left to play. In the case of Durham, they have six games remaining but those fixtures include the longest journey in the FA Women’s Championship, a 670-mile round trip to Lewes and two treks to London where The Wildcats will face the London Bees and Charlton Athletic.

The miles which Durham must travel in total is 1,731, that’s more than the next most Northern club, Blackburn Rovers, who will travel 1,648 miles but will play one game away from home more than Lee Sanders’ side. Of the remaining nine clubs in the FA Women’s Championship, only Aston Villa are set to travel more than 1,000 miles for their remaining away fixtures.

Six of the other eight clubs will travel between 700 and 1,000 miles for their matches away from home. The side with the least travelling are London Bees who must clock up just 506 miles on the road despite having four away games left to play.

At the current time, nobody knows when or if the season will resume or what the timescale will be for completing matches. In cases such as Durham’s, there must be careful consideration put into rearranging the FA Women’s Championship calendar with those long trips being almost impossible to reschedule in midweek with some players having other commitments away from the game.
