It was always going to be a difficult year for Coventry United when they made the big step up from the FA Women’s National League to the FA Women Championship and that was reflected in their end of season standing.
Coventry United sat just outside the relegation zone, two points ahead of Charlton Athletic but having played two games more than The Addicks when the season was brought to a premature end. Consequently, they have probably benefitted more than most from the cancellation of the season and the elimination of relegation from the league.
Nevertheless, a season stretches across many months and in amongst it there will always be many highs that are worthy of celebration and earlier this month, Coventry United took the time to recognise the achievements of their players.
Supporters’ Player of the Season – SHANNON O’BRIEN
O’Brien finished the season as Coventry’s joint-top goalscorer with six goals in all competitions and her endeavours were recognised in the eyes of the United faithful. Having only just turned 18 last October, O’Brien is already playing like a footballer well beyond her years and has established herself as a mainstay in the Coventry United starting line-up. O’Brien featured 17 times for her side which just demonstrates the confidence which both her manager and the fans both have in her.

Manager’s Player of the Season – KATY MORRIS
The bespectacled Katy Morris made the long journey south from Chorley to join Coventry United last summer and hit the ground running with her new club. Morris is still based in her native Lancashire yet is somehow able to make it to every training session and home game with the Warwickshire club despite the arduous commute. That level of devotion and commitment to the Red and Greens has certainly endeared her in the heart of her new manager, who can’t really ask much more from the midfielder.

Players’ Player of the Season – AMBER HUGHES
Coventry United’s other joint-top goalscorer for last season, Hughes’ contribution of seven goals in all competitions proved invaluable to a side often lacking solidity at the back. Coventry United had the joint-worst defence in the FA Women’s Championship last season conceding 35 goals across 14 games, yet they had the sixth-best attack. Therefore, if it wasn’t for the goals that the likes of Hughes and O’Brien brought to the side, their position could have been more precarious at the end of the season. This award clearly reflects the gratitude that Hughes’ teammates undoubtedly have for her and if they are able to tighten things up at the back next season, Coventry United could very easily see themselves climbing up the table.
