Former Arsenal defender Dominique Bloodworth was on target for current club VfL Wolfsburg as they eventually saw off SGS Essen to lift the DFB Frauen Pokal this evening.

The two sides battled out a thrilling 3-3 draw after 90 minutes and with no further goals in extra-time, the game went to a penalty shootout.

Former Gunner Bloodworth netted the She-Wolves’ third goal while she also found the back of the net in the shootout as Stephan Lerch’s side eventually won a tie which they expected to ease through.

It was a disastrous start for VfL Wolfsburg when Lea Schuller scored inside a minute for SGS Essen. Pernille Harder soon levelled matters but there was a further twist when Marina Hegering netted a second goal for the underdogs.

The scoreline remained the same until the 70th minute when VfL Wolfsburg finally found a second equaliser. Anna Blasse thumped an effort on goal and the ball flew into the SGS Essen net.

Lerch’s side looked to have won the tie when former Arsenal defender Bloodworth headed home from a corner kick but Irini Ioannidou scrambled home an injury time equaliser to force extra-time.

No further goals were scored during the additional 30 minutes. Bloodworth opened the scoring in the shootout before her side went on to win 4-2 on penalty kicks to secure the DFB Frauen Pokal.

Bloodworth joined VfL Wolfsburg from Arsenal last summer and she has now won both the FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga and the DFB Frauen Pokal during her first season at the AOK-Stadion.
