Manchester City defender Gemma Bonner has signed a new two-year contract at The Academy Stadium according to reports on the club’s official website.

The 28-year-old Leeds-born defender joined Manchester City from former Barclays FA Women’s Super League rivals Liverpool in summer 2018 and she has made a positive impression during her two years playing in sky blue.

With new Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor putting down some early foundations for next season, it has today been confirmed that defender Bonner has agreed a new contract with the club until 2022. Bonner was hugely important to her side last season as she appeared in every minute of Barclays FA Women’s Super League football, weighing in with goals in home victories over Bristol City, Everton and former side Liverpool.

Upon signing her new deal, Bonner told official Manchester City media sources “I’m really happy to put pen to paper and I’m looking forward to getting back with the rest of the squad ahead of the new season.

“I’ve had a really good two years at the Club so far and especially last season, I felt like I played some of my best football so far with some incredible players around me, so I can’t wait to continue that journey.

“With the appointment of Gareth Taylor as our Head Coach too, it’s a really exciting time for the Club and we’re ready for the challenges that lie ahead.”

The player started her career with Leeds United before moving to Chelsea. A six-year spell with Liverpool followed, where Bonner won two FA Women’s Super League 1 titles, before her latest move to Manchester City.

The defender will be aiming for Barclays FA Women’s Super League glory with Manchester City after lifting both domestic cups with the club in 2018/2019.
