German international goalkeeper Lisa Weiss has joined newly-promoted Barclays FA Women’s Super League side Aston Villa according to reports on the club’s official website.
The 32-year-old moves to The Banks’s Stadium from French giants Lyon. The keeper made four appearances for the Division 1 Feminine and European champions since her move from SGS Essen in 2018 for whom she featured 169 times.
In addition, she was also part of the German squad which won the 2009 UEFA Women’s EURO in Finland but didn’t feature for Die Nationalelf en route to the trophy. She eventually made her international debut in 2010 when she came on as a 17th-minute substitute for the injured Nadine Angerer in a 3-0 victory over North Korea.
Weiss is the fourth signing of the summer thus far for Gemma Davies’ side following the acquisitions of Chloe Arthur, Anita Asante, and Diana Silva. After the departure of Daniela Kosinska earlier this summer, Aston Villa were down to just the single goalkeeper in Sian Rodgers, therefore it was expected that this would be an area for which they would be looking to recruit and they appear to have found a more than adequate replacement for Kosinska.
After securing the services of Weiss, Aston Villa boss Davies told the club’s official media channels “Lisa is going to bring many qualities, on and off the pitch, to complement our existing squad.
“She knows what it takes to be successful at the top level, both on the international stage and domestically.
“Lisa was keen to take on a new challenge and we’re hoping she can help us as we embark on our first season in the FA Women’s Super League.”
With the Barclays FA Women’s Super League scheduled to begin in the first week of September, Villa are well on their way to assembling a very experienced and robust squad ahead of their first foray into the top flight.
