Dutch midfielder to return to Arsenal early with minor knee injury

Dutch midfielder will return to Arsenal ahead of schedule after picking up a minor knee injury whilst on international duty according to reports on the KNVB’s official website.

The 23-year-old has been in sparkling form for club and country so far this season, netting back-to-back hat-tricks in an Arsenal shirt and scoring the only goal as The Netherlands defeated Russia in Moscow on Friday.

Roord was substituted by Dutch boss Sarina Wiegman in the 73rd minute at the Sapsan Arena and it has now been revealed that the midfielder picked up a minor knock to her knee. It is understood that The Netherlands squad have returned to the KVNB training complex in Zeist for a short training camp and debrief, however, Roord has pulled out with injury and will return to her club early.

The player’s injury is not thought to be serious and while a timescale for recovery has not been confirmed, Arsenal head coach Joe Montemurro will be hoping to have Roord available for selection when Arsenal take on North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their long-awaited Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Meadow park next weekend.

Roord has tripled her goal return from last season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League in two games this term. The league’s top scorer is in the form of her life and looks to be one of Arsenal’s biggest assets this season.
