Liverpool and Manchester United get one of the toughest groups in this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup underway on Wednesday afternoon as the pair go into battle at Prenton Park.

Two of the most iconic names in football contest their group with in-form Everton and a star-studded Manchester City side for the right to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.

Liverpool go into the match having moved to the FA Women’s Championship summit on Sunday courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Coventry United. Promotion will be the ultimate goal for The Reds this season and it remains to be seen whether manager Vicky Jepson will field her strongest side against Manchester United with the games coming thick and fast.

Ashley Hodson pulled out of the Liverpool starting line-up ahead of kick-off at the Butts Park Arena and could be replaced by youngster Lucy Parry or more experienced full-back Becky Jane, although the latter is being edged back into action carefully after returning from injury.

Manchester United travel to Prenton Park with a good record against Liverpool. Casey Stoney’s side have won both of their previous meetings with The Reds and are yet to concede a goal.

The Red Devils have also started the season strongly and were 3-0 winners against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out. Manager Stoney is likely to implement squad rotation for her side’s first fixture in this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup, although she has limited options available to her ahead of the match. The likes of Lucy Staniforth and Jane Ross could be installed into the starting XI while she could opt to hand goalkeeper Emily Ramsey a rare start.

The FA Women’s Continental League Cup tie between Liverpool and Manchester United is scheduled to kick-off at 2pm on Wednesday afternoon and will be available to watch via LFCTV GO, MUTV, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
