Spurs unlucky to come away with nothing from United clash – Amoros

Tottenham Hotspur’s joint-head coach Juan Amoros believes that his side played well enough to get something out of their Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United at The Hive this afternoon.

In a game of few chances, Spurs were defeated 1-0 in North West London with Manchester United defender Millie Turner heading in the only goal midway through the second half.

Speaking in Tottenham Hotspur’s official post-match press conference in which FA Women’s Super League Full-Time were present, Amoros admitted that his side were unfortunate not to take something from the game.

“We knew that United would be a tough team but the girls worked extremely hard to get something out of the game” said the Spaniard.

“I am truly gutted because I think that we deserved at least a point, particularly if we had taken some of the chances early in the game.

“They got on top of us a little towards the end of the first half and started the second half stronger but then we ended the game the stronger.

“It was a very even game but we know that tight games are won and lost in the box and today they were better than us.”

The winning goal came from a set piece with Turner rising highest to loop the ball in with her head following a corner kick from the right. Given the work which Spurs do on the training pitch every day on set pieces, Amoros was frustrated in the way in which the goal was conceded.

He said “We work on set pieces a lot and we’ve lost our marker and the ball goes in the back of the net.

“Every set piece goal is something which is preventable but we will also have to look at the way which we conceded the corner because is was probably unnecessary if we have lost the ball in the middle of the pitch.

“We will analyse it and tailor those finer details to get more points on the board.”

Next up is a North London derby against Arsenal at Meadow Park and Amoros believes that his side will be ready for that test.

“For us, it is always a massive game” Amoros said. “We know that the scoreline flattered them last time we played them and it wasn’t what we deserved.

“We are growing and I am sure that next week, the girls will go into the game with a positive mindset and try to find that positive result.”

Spurs have collected just one point so far this season, however, it should be noted that they have already faced Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United. Three points at Arsenal next weekend would really kick-start their season.
