The latest of many anticipated twists and turns in the FA Women’s Championship promotion race saw Leicester City defeat Liverpool 2-1 at Farley Way this afternoon.
The visitors arrived in Quorn on the back of a 3-1 FA Women’s Continental League Cup victory over top tier side Manchester United in midweek but they were unable to take points from a Leicester City side who are expected to be right up there come the end of the FA Women’s Championship season.
In a first half of few clear-cut chances, Leicester City netted the only goal after 22 minutes when a lovely free-flowing move ended with Paige Bailey-Gayle lashing the ball into the net.
Ashleigh Plumptre thought she had extended the home side’s lead early in the second half but the ball was adjudged to have not crossed the line. Moments later, Leicester City did net a second goal with Lachante Paul on target for Jonathan Morgan’s side.
Jess Clarke pulled a goal back for Liverpool when she bundled the ball home from close range to set up a nervy finish but the home side held on to collect all three points and increase the pressure on the sides above them in the FA Women’s Championship table.
This afternoon’s result sees Liverpool drop to third place in the table, two points ahead of fifth-placed Leicester City who have a game in hand on The Reds.
