Everton goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela could edge closer to a century of senior international appearances for Finland with the player having been named in head coach Anna Signeul’s latest squad.
Finland currently lead their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualification group ahead of their meeting with second-placed nation Scotland in Helsinki on Tuesday 27 October.
The Finnish Football Association have today announced head coach Signeul’s 25-player squad for the fixture with Everton goalkeeper Korpela being one of three English-based players included. The 34-year-old appears alongside Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Nora Heroum and forward Juliette Kemppi of London City Lionesses.
Everton keeper Korpela has played every minute of qualifying for her country so far, keeping clean sheets in victories over Albania and Cyprus. The player goes into the latest round of internationals with 91 senior caps to her name and she is likely to take another step towards the century mark by featuring against Scotland in 11 days’ time.
Korpela had represented Finland at various youth levels prior to making her senior international debut against Sweden in the 2007 Algarve Cup. The player is looking to represent Finland in a third UEFA Women’s EURO in less two years’ time after previously making the squad for the 2009 and 2013 finals. Victory over Scotland would put Signeul’s ‘Class of 2022’ in an excellent position to qualify.
