The 2019/2020 Vitality Women’s FA Cup final is just eight days away with Everton preparing to face Manchester City.
Ahead of next Sunday’s final, FA Women’s Super League Full-Time will be looking back at finals from previous years.
We start our journey back in time in 2015 and the first-ever Women’s FA Cup final to be held at Wembley Stadium. A record crowd of 30,710 descended upon the national stadium as an ambitious Chelsea side seeking their first major trophy prepared to face Notts County.
With Chelsea coming into the match on the back of two consecutive defeats and Notts County being underdogs, it was a cagey first half hour at Wembley in which clear-cut chances were at a premium. Eni Aluko came close to breaking the deadlock on the half-hour but couldn’t direct the ball beyond Notts County goalkeeper Carly Telford.
The Lady Pies keeper came out on top against Aluko again soon after before the Chelsea forward played in Ji So-yun to bundle the ball into the net six minutes before the break as The Blues took a deserved lead.
Notts County were improved after the break with Desiree Scott and Leanne Crichton going close to netting an equaliser.
As the half went on, Chelsea pushed forward for the game’s second goal but Telford again denied Aluko before defender Gilly Flaherty missed a great chance to put the tie to bed when she was unable to direct her shot on target.
The Blues were not punished for those missed opportunities with Emma Hayes’ side going on to win the match 1-0 and in-turn, lift their first major trophy.
