Manchester United forward Alessia Russo is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury during a training session, the club have confirmed.
United fans were hoping to see the striker in action this afternoon as Casey Stoney’s side take on league leaders Arsenal in their latest Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture but United have confirmed that Russo will need surgery on a hamstring injury which she has picked up whilst on the training pitch.
The club broke the bad news to fans earlier this afternoon via their official Twitter account. At this stage, it is unknown just how long Russo will face on the sidelines.

Russo had made a real positive impression for United since joining the club on a two-year deal in nearly September. The forward has netted an impressive three goals in just five starts including a brace in United’s last fixture, a 4-2 victory over West Ham United at The Chigwell Construction Stadium in Dagenham last month.
The absence of Russo is a real blow for United who are aiming to go top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table with victory over Arsenal at The Leigh Sports Village this afternoon.
