PREVIEW: Aston Villa v Birmingham City

Aston Villa and Birmingham City will contest a first-ever Barclays FA Women’s Super League Second City derby this afternoon with the pair going head-to-head at Villa Park.

The two rivals are separated by just three points in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table and go into the match in good form.

Gemma Davies’ Aston Villa side will run out at Villa Park this afternoon on the back of three consecutive victories in all competitions. Villa recorded their first-ever top flight win at Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend while they thrashed Coventry United 9-0 in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup in midweek.

Villa boss Davies rotated her squad heavily in midweek and is likely to revert to a similar side which faced Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. Goalkeeper Lisa Weiss and defenders Caro Seims, Elisha N’Dow and Natalie Haigh are those players who are most likely to retain their places from the victory at the Butts Park Arena in midweek.

Birmingham City travel across the city having won all of their last three matches on the road in all competitions. Carla Ward’s side have not conceded an away goal since the 2019/2020 Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Brighton & Hove Albion in late September. The Blues are thin on numbers ahead of their trip to Villa Park due to injuries with manager Ward having only had 10 available players in midweek. It is likely that Birmingham City will struggle to name substitutes this afternoon.

The Second City derby is scheduled to kick-off at 2.30pm and will be available to watch live on the FA Player.
