Home woes continue as West Ham United are defeated by Brighton & Hove Albion

West Ham United’s losing start to Barclays FA Women’s Super League life at The Chigwell Construction Stadium has continued with Matt Beard’s side going down 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rianna Jarrett netted the only goal of the game for the visitors with 21 minutes remaining on what was another miserable afternoon for Matt Beard’s Hammers.

In a first half of few chances, both sides were largely restricted to goal attempts from range with neither keeper being severely tested. It was West Ham United who really should have been ahead at the break but Martha Thomas missed a gilt-edged opportunity when in a great position to score, dragging her low shot wide across goal.

The second half saw Alisha Lehmann spurn a good opportunity, firing a shot over the bar following a quick West Ham United break upfield.

The Hammers were made to rue that miss moments later when the visitors took the lead. Albion forward Jarrett lifted the ball over home keeper Mackenzie Arnold before outmuscling Gilly Flaherty and heading into an unguarded net.

Inessa Kaagman then saw an effort saved by Arnold as Brighton & Hove Albion threatened a second goal before visiting keeper Cecilie Fiskerstrand saved a couple of efforts from range from West Ham United substitute Kenza Dali as the scoreline ended 1-0 in The Seagulls’ favour.

The result sees Brighton & Hove Albion move four points clear of West Ham United in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table.
