Tottenham Hotspur forward Alex Morgan missed the decisive spot kick as her side were defeated 5-4 on penalties by Arsenal in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup at Meadow Park this evening.

The North London rivals played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in normal time before Arsenal claimed the bonus point courtesy of a penalty shootout victory.

The hosts took an 11th-minute lead in Boreham Wood when some clever play from Kim Little created the opportunity for Vivianne Miedema to score.

Spurs levelled matters early in the second half when in-form defender Siri Worm played in Ria Percival to score from close range.

It almost got even better for Karen Hills and Juan Amoros’ side when Angela Addison took aim on goal but her effort could only cannon off the woodwork before Arsenal regained the lead through Caitlin Foord.

The Gunners looked set to record a victory which would potentially keep their hopes of qualification alive but there was to be a late twist when Worm’s corner kick was bundled home by Shelina Zadorsky, ensuring a share of the spoils for Spurs and the opportunity to battle for a bonus point in a penalty shootout.

With the winner of the shootout moving onto five points, in reality, neither side would retain any real chance of reaching the FA Women’s Continental League Cup quarter-finals regardless of the outcome. Arsenal successfully converted all five of their spot kicks but Spurs only scored four of theirs with Morgan missing her kick as the home side won the shootout.

Chelsea are therefore the winners of the group with neither Arsenal or Spurs finishing as one of the two best runners-up from the six groups.
