Durham defender undergoes surgery on knee injury

Durham defender Abby Holmes has undergone surgery on a knee injury which she sustained in the opening weeks of the season.

The 29-year-old sustained a torn meniscus, an injury which is likely to see her sidelined for a number of months.

Holmes provided an update on her injury via her personal Twitter account this morning and the player has confirmed that she has undergone surgery and will now begin her rehabilitation programme in the coming weeks. Durham have not put a timescale on Holmes’ expected recovery time but the player is not expected to return to action until 2021.

Holmes started both of Durham’s first two matches in this season’s FA Women’s Championship. The player helped Lee Sanders’ side to record an excellent 1-1 draw at Liverpool and a 3-0 home victory over Lewes. The versatile defender was last seen in the Durham squad for their home fixture against London City Lionesses at the end of September, she was an unused substitute for that match.

In other injury news, forward Iris Achterhof also went under the surgeon’s knife this week as she looks to recover from the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury sustained on the opening day of the season while Becky Salicki continues to rest after fracturing her shin last month.
