Former Everton defender Kika van Es netted her first home goal for new club FC Twente this afternoon as they inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Eredivisie Vrouwen leaders Ajax in Enschede.

The 29-year-old netted the first of two goals for the hosts as they came from behind to win the match 2-1 at the Sportpark Het Diekman, although her strike was definitely one for the Dubious Goals Panel.

Visitors Ajax went into the match with seven wins out of seven in this season’s Eredivisie Vrouwen and the game was going with the form book when Marjolein van den Bighelaar opened the scoring after half an hour.

FC Twente fought back with former Everton defender Van Es flicking the ball home with her head following a corner kick from the right. Her club have credited her with the goal, however, there are also claims the ball may have hit visiting defender Stefanie van de Gragt on the way to it finding the back of the net. If this proves to be the case, Van de Gragt will have netted an own goal in both league fixtures between the two sides this season.

The hosts netted the decisive goal in the second half with Jenna Kalma on target as FC Twente moved to within five points of the league summit.

Defender Van Es spent 14 months with former club Everton before moving to FC Twente in September this year. The player made 10 appearances for The Blue Girls in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
