Manchester City left-back Megan Campbell is understood to have withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad due to injury.

The 27-year-old Drogheda-born defender was recently called up by national team head coach Vera Pauw for the Republic of Ireland’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying match against Germany next Tuesday.

Campbell has not featured for the Republic of Ireland since she played the full 90 minutes of the nation’s 3-2 victory over the Ukraine more than a year ago with the player having been hit with long-term injury. The defender will have hoped to have made her comeback against Germany in Dublin next week, however, her club have today confirmed that Campbell has picked up a knock in training which has forced her to withdraw from Pauw’s squad.

Campbell’s latest injury blow is not thought to be serious and Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor will be hoping to have the player available for the club’s hectic pre-Christmas schedule. With Campbell having spent a large chunk of the last 12 months on the sidelines, all parties have seemingly taken a cautious approach to the knock which she has picked up this week.

The defender is experienced at international level. She has represented her country on 42 occasions at senior level while she has netted two goals. Campbell made her senior debut against Switzerland at Richmond Park in Dublin the best part of a decade ago and has been on the national team’s radar ever since.
