Seven FAWSL and FAWC clubs given the green light to welcome back fans next weekend

Seven clubs in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship are free to welcome fans back to stadiums next weekend after the UK Government today announced their new tiered winter response plan to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The country will be divided up into three tiers with those areas in tiers one and two able to host sporting events with spectators once again.

Seven clubs from both the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship who are set to host fixtures on the weekend of 5/6 December fall into tier two meaning that they are permitted to accommodate up to 2,000 spectators at their matches for the first time since last winter.

In the next round of Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures, Arsenal, Chelsea, Reading and Tottenham Hotspur will all be permitted to allow fans to attend their matches should they be in a position to do so, however, the fixture between Aston Villa and Manchester United will remain behind-closed-doors due to Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium falling within tier three restrictions.

Whilst Everton are allowed to welcome fans back to Walton Hall Park for their fixture against Manchester City, the club have opted against this and the match remains behind-closed-doors.

In the FA Women’s Championship, Lewes and Liverpool will be able to admit supporters for their home fixtures against Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace should they be in a position to do so, although the other three fixtures at Durham, Leicester City and London City Lionesses fall within tier three areas where fans will remain locked out.

In total, 13 of the 23 Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship clubs are now permitted to admit supporters again with the UK Government’s tiered system set for further review on 16 December.

Further details regarding the admission of spectators to tier two venues, including rules and restrictions regarding away travel, are expected to be provided in due course.
