Manchester City midfielder Sam Mewis described playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League as ‘an honour’ after helping her side to a 2-1 victory over Goteborg in the first leg of their round of 32 tie this afternoon.

The 28-year-old FIFA Women’s World Cup winner made her first appearance in European football’s elite club competition this afternoon as Manchester City came from behind to record a narrow victory in icy conditions in Sweden.

The prospect of playing UEFA Women’s Champions League football is becoming something of a magnet for attracting top class talent to Europe from across the world. In the case of Manchester City midfielder Mewis, she was honoured to experience playing in the competition in Sweden this afternoon.

“It was very exciting” said Mewis when speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time in the post-match press conference. “It’s obviously an honour to play Champions League and something which every top player dreams of.

“To get on the scoresheet was special and I feel really fortunate to be playing for a club like Manchester City in such a great competition.”

Manchester City missed some good opportunities to establish a greater advantage in Gothenburg and Mewis went on to admit that there is some room for improvement.

The United States international added “We are capable of more, this team are always striving to perform at the top level that we can.

“Goteborg are a great team but we know that we could have scored more goals or been a little more clinical in the final third.

“We know we have some work to do.”

Mewis has been one of the most impressive additions to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this season and the player is proving to be a real asset for Manchester City in all competitions. The midfielder is certainly one for the big occasion with this afternoon’s UEFA Women’s Champions League goal coming a little over a month on from her goal in the 2019/2020 Vitality Women’s FA Cup final.

Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor will be hoping for another big performance from his central midfielder when The Cityzens host Barclays FA Women’s Super League title rivals Arsenal on Sunday.
