Alex Morgan scored her second goal in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt while Rosella Ayane netted her first league goal as Rehanne Skinner’s side recorded a 3-1 win over Aston Villa at The Hive.
Spurs made two changes from the team that beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 last week with Kit Graham returning from injury to replace Josie Green and Hannah Godfrey coming in for Anna Filbey. Aston Villa were unchanged following their midweek 4-0 win against Bristol City.
Both sides started brightly but Spurs looked the more dangerous in the opposition penalty area. After 13 minutes, Morgan looked to be clear through on goal but was brought down by visiting keeper Lisa Weiss in the Villa goal and a penalty was awarded. The United States international took the penalty kick herself and made no mistake in scoring from the spot for the second week in a row.
Villa were not deterred however and 10 minutes later they were back on level terms after a misplaced pass from Shelina Zadorsky was intercepted by Nadine Hanssen who spotted Becky Spencer off her line and she lifted a shot from distance that dipped just below the bar.
Spurs continued to look the more threatening as the game progressed and they took the lead once again after 36 minutes. Morgan played in a low cross which ricocheted off both Ria Percival and Caro Siems before finding it’s way into the net for an own goal to see Spurs go in at the break 2-1 up.
After the half-time interval, Spurs replaced Graham with Rachel Williams, a player who was also returning from injury, while Aston Villa bought on Diana Silva for Shania Hayles. The early stages of the second half saw neither side create any real opportunities on goal. With just under half an hour to go, Spurs extended their lead thanks to a deflected shot from Rosella Ayane. It was the attacker’s first Barclays FA Women’s Super League goal for the North Londoners and it wrapped up a deserved three points for the hosts.
Spurs move up to eighth place in the table whilst Aston Villa drop to 11th with a game in hand over the teams around them. Gemma Davies’ side are back in London again next weekend as they travel to West Ham United while Tottenham Hotspur make the short trip to Kingsmeadow to face Chelsea.
