West Ham United’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Aston Villa which was due to take place at The Chigwell Construction Stadium on Sunday has been postponed.

The Hammers have this afternoon released an official club statement advising that the match has been called off on safety grounds following a small number of positive COVID-19 tests at the club.

A new date for the fixture is expected to be agreed between the two clubs in due course with the match set to be rescheduled in early 2021.

The postponement is particularly frustrating for Gemma Davies’ Aston Villa side who have endured a stop-start first half of the season, their maiden campaign in the top flight. Villa lost a month of football as a result of their own positive COVID-19 tests in October, although many of those games which were postponed have since been rescheduled and played.

The postponement of West Ham United’s fixture against Aston Villa means that both clubs end 2020 in the lower reaches of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table. The Hammers end the year in 10th position while newly-promoted Villa are one point and one place behind them.

West Ham United are likely to have appointed a new manager by the time the two clubs contest the rearranged fixture with their recruitment process thought to be ongoing.
