Brighton & Hove Albion defender Victoria Williams believes that this afternoon’s fixture against Reading at The People’s Pension Stadium presents a big opportunity for the club to get more points on the board.
The Seagulls could leapfrog The Royals in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table while there is a realistic chance that the club could also end 2020 in the top six.
When speaking in Brighton & Hove Albion’s pre-match press conference, in which FA Women’s Super League Full-Time were present, Williams highlighted the importance of this afternoon’s fixture.
“It is an opportunity and it isn’t one which we can let pass us by” said Williams.
“We don’t play again until the second week of January so I think the squad is more than ready and they are chomping at the bit.”
Brighton & Hove Albion have scored just two goals in their last five matches in all competitions and it is fair to say that the points will only come if The Seagulls begin to create more chances and become more ruthless in-front of goal, something which Williams agrees with.
The defender said “Goals win games don’t they, the games are won and lost in both boxes.
“If we can build on that resilience and organisation shown last week (against Chelsea), the chances will come. It is just a question of if we take them.
“We will always be in a game if we are not leaking goals as well.
“We are chomping at the bit for this opportunity before the Christmas break to try and get a bit of momentum and keep the morale high.”
It has been a season of progress for Albion so far and Williams went on to explain that mediocrity is something which is no longer acceptable for the club in what is their third year as a Barclays FA Women’s Super League outfit.
“If it wasn’t for a couple of the poor results that we have had recently against Villa and Tottenham, we would have been in a different position” said Williams. “That shows the mentality of where we are at and where we want to be.
“We no longer want to be a bottom half team and neither does the club.”
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Reading at The People’s Pension Stadium is scheduled to kick-off at 2.30pm this afternoon and will be available to watch live on BT Sport 1.
