Leicester City have moved three points clear at the top of the FA Women’s Championship table with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Farley Way this afternoon.
Ashleigh Plumptre and Natasha Flint goal the goals for Jonathan Morgan’s side as they capitalised on promotion rivals Durham’s slip up earlier in the day to extend their advantage at the summit.
Flint was unlucky not to open the scoring in the early moments of the game when she saw an effort strike the post.
The Foxes were to take the lead midway through the first period when Plumptre rifled the ball home following a corner kick before Sheffield United keeper Fran Kitching did well to keep a Sophie Howard header out of the net.
Kitching was again called into action early in the second half as she saved a Charlie Devlin effort before Courtney Sweetman-Kirk missed a big chance to equalise at the other end.
Neil Redfearn’s side did level matters with 17 minutes left on the clock through a sublime Katie Wilkinson free-kick but the hosts soon regained their lead when Flint struck from the edge of the area four minutes later.
Sheffield United did not have another goal in them on an afternoon which has surely condemned them to another year of FA Women’s Championship football and has strengthened Leicester City’s title hopes further.
