Manchester United left-back Lotta Ökvist has now returned home to join reigning Swedish champions Göteborg FC according to reports on the Barclays FA Women’s Super League club’s official website.

Ökvist, 23, joined Casey Stoney’s side from Hammarby IF at the beginning of the 2019/2020 Barclays FA Women’s Super League season with the intention for her to replace former United captain, Alex Greenwood.

The Swedish International made her debut at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City in the inaugural Manchester women’s derby and looked to be a player of potential in her first few appearances.

As the season wore on, she seemed to lose favour with United manager Stoney and failed to live up to the high expectations and demands made of her. Natural right-backs Martha Harris and Kirsty Smith were selected ahead of her towards the end of last season and this term, in spite of a few sporadic appearances, new signing Ona Batlle and even winger Leah Galton were deemed more suitable options at left-back than the Swede.

Ökvist leaves The Red Devils having made 10 appearances in her short spell in Manchester, with the Barclays FA Women’s Super League proving to be very quick and physical for the young full-back. She will hope to enjoy more game time back in her homeland so that she can remain a fixture in the Swedish national squad and further her development. It remains to be seen whether the current Barclays FA Women’s Super League leaders will replace Ökvist or whether Stoney is happy with her squad as she continues her title charge with The Reds.
