‘I really loved it more than I expected’ – United States forward Morgan reflects on time at Spurs

Alex Morgan has admitted that her decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur was a difficult one when speaking ahead of the 2021 SheBelieves Cup.

In a US Soccer media event held ahead of her nation’s opening group stage game against Canada on Friday, Morgan opened up to the media, including FAWSL Full-Time, about her brief spell in the UK.

“As I went through the season with Tottenham, I really enjoyed my time” Morgan said.

“I really loved it more than I expected and I got to know the girls a lot better than I thought I would.”

Morgan’s move to Tottenham Hotspur was one of the highest-profile Barclays FA Women’s Super League transfers in history, however, the American star made just five appearances for the North London club before returning to the United States in December.

Morgan said that the transfer was always meant to be short-term, however, as the season went on the decision to leave was made a lot tougher.

She added “The decision ended up being a lot harder than I expected, I really weighed up both sides for a couple of weeks.

“Ultimately, it just came down to coming back to the US, so that I could keep my family as close as possible given the circumstances surrounding the pandemic.”

Morgan gave birth to her first child Charlie in May 2020, and alongside husband Servando Carrasco has balanced parenting with her footballing career.

The striker also admitted she always knew the move to the UK would be a strain to her family, as her daughter would have to go a long time without seeing her grandparents or many cousins.

Now, Morgan hopes to further her career as she returns to Orlando Pride for the upcoming season but despite this, she did refuse to rule out a move back to Europe further down the line.

“If someone would’ve asked me a year ago if I would’ve considered playing in Europe, I’d have said no” she said.

“So, I think moving forward it would be unfair to rule another move out. I think with all the uncertainty right now it could always happen again; you never know.”

Morgan will also hope to replicate her nation’s success in the upcoming SheBelieves Cup, as the United States look to become back-to-back winners of the competition.
