Manchester United’s Jackie Groenen and Arsenal’s Danielle van de Donk scored the goals as The Netherlands won the ‘Three Nations, One Goal’ tournament by defeating Germany 2-1 in Venlo this evening.
Sarina Wiegman’s side defeated Belgium 6-1 in their opening tournament match on Thursday and they followed up that victory with a first victory in 21 years over former world champions Germany.
The Dutch opened the scoring in the 16th minute when record goalscorer Vivianne Miedema teed up Groenen to fire the ball home.
Germany created the more chances throughout the match and they went into the break on level terms when Laura Freigang netted in the final minute of the first half.
With The Netherlands boasting the better goal difference, Germany knew that they would need to score again in the second half to have any chance of winning the tournament. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side were dealt a major blow on the hour mark when Van de Donk put the Dutch back in-front.
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim forward Tabea Wassmuth was thrown on by Germany as they looked to find an equalising goal to set up a tense finale but it wasn’t to be as The Netherlands started 2021 with a bang by becoming ‘Three Nations, One Goal’ champions.
