Coventry United goalkeeper Sue Wood has announced her retirement from playing following a career which has seen her make more than 350 senior appearances.
Wood has been the first choice goalkeeper for The Red and Greens for the last few years with her good performances resulting in many referring to her as ‘Van der Sue’ in comparison to former Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
The player was an ever-present for Jay Bardford’s side during their debut campaign in the FA Women’s Championship in 2019/2020 while she has built on that proud record by making 18 further appearances in the league this term.
Wood appeared for Coventry United in their 7-1 defeat at Durham last weekend and the player has today revealed that her appearance at Maiden Castle was her last. Wood announced her retirement from playing in a post on her personal Twitter account earlier today.

Wood’s retirement is likely to push Coventry United manager Jay Bradford into the transfer market for another goalkeeper this summer to provide competition for the club’s goalkeeping jersey. The Warwickshire club have an excellent young goalkeeper already on their books in the form of Welsh international Olivia Clark and it could be a case that the teenager will get her opportunity to stake her claim for the number one jersey during pre-season.
