Sheffield United midfielder Sophie Walton has signed a new one-year deal at The Technique Stadium.

The 31-year-old joined The Blades last summer following a spell with FA Women’s National League North club Nottingham Forest and she has gone on to make nine appearances for Neil Redfearn’s side in this season’s FA Women’s Championship.

With head coach Redfearn now putting down the foundations for next season, it has today been confirmed that Walton has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep her with Sheffield United until next summer. The new contract will also see Walton take up a coaching role with the club. The Blades revealed the news in an official club press release issued to FAWSL Full-Time this afternoon.

Speaking to Sheffield United’s official media team after signing her new deal, Walton said “I’m over the moon. I enjoyed my season last year, I took the step into the Championship and it took me a bit of time to find my feet but it’s a good club, it’s a family club.

“I was welcomed from the first day and it’s a great group of girls. I’m excited to see what we can do this year.

“I think the new role will suit me. Four or five years ago, I didn’t have much interest in that side of the game but as I’ve got older and seen how some of the younger girls have taken to me, I definitely think it’s a role I can have an impact with now.”

Walton helped Sheffield United to a fourth-place finish in the FA Women’s Championship this season and the goal is now to mount a stronger push for promotion next term.
