Team GB’s warm up match against Zambia which was due to take place in Stoke next month has been cancelled, The Football Association have confirmed.
Hege Riise’s side were set to take on Zambia at the bet365 Stadium on 1 July but the game has been cancelled as a result of COVID-19 complications for the travelling side.
A number of fans had snapped up a limited batch of tickets for the match but they will now be refunded with Team GB seemingly set to travel to the Olympic Games in Tokyo without playing a single practice match.
The Women’s Football Tournament at the Olympic Games will begin on 21 July. Team GB will open their group campaign with a match against Chile in Sapporo. Riise’s side will then take on host nation Japan at the same venue three days later before ending their group fixtures with a match against Canada in Kashima on 27 July.
Team GB are one of 12 teams set to compete in the Women’s Football Tournament this summer. They are joined in the competition by FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 finalists the United States and The Netherlands while the likes of Brazil, Australia and Sweden will also be competing for gold.
The final will take place in Yokohama on 7 August.
