Liverpool have made Bristol City defender Jas Matthews their fourth signing of the summer according to reports on The Reds’ official website.

The centre-back has returned to the club where she spent the 2018/2019 season before moving to Bristol City where she had initially began her career. Matthews’ second Bristol City departure was announced earlier this week.

The former England youth international reunites with manager Matt Beard at Liverpool with the pair having previously worked together at Bristol City this season. Matthews will be wearing the number six shirt in the famous red of Liverpool which was previously unassigned before her arrival.

Matthews follows Leanne Kiernan, Yana Daniels and Megan Campbell in making the move to Liverpool this week. All of these players have extensive Barclays FA Women’s Super League experience and therefore it could be argued that Beard and his backroom staff are preparing for next season in the FA Women’s Championship but also for a potential return to the top tier in the long run.

Liverpool will need to be much improved in the FA Women’s Super League next season if they are to claim top spot. They finished the last campaign in third place, a disappointing 11 points behind champions Leicester City and consequently, they will be relying on big performances from their summer signings if they are to close the gap in the coming season.
