Manchester City have today confirmed that United States international defender Abby Dahlkemper has left the club.

The 28-year-old centre-back signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with The Cityzens back in January but Manchester City have today revealed that the player has transferred back to her NWSL rights-holding team North Carolina Courage.

During her brief spell with Manchester City, Dahlkemper featured for the club on 13 occasions in all competitions. She helped her side record nine clean sheets in those matches, her performances helping City push hard for silverware in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.

Dahlkemper has previously been linked with a return to her native America therefore today’s announcement comes as no major surprise. Her departure does leave a gap when it comes to Manchester City’s defensive options, particularly with Gemma Bonner having also completed a move to the NWSL back in April. Head coach Gareth Taylor has brought in youngster Ruby Mace over the summer but he may be tempted to sign at least one experienced centre-back before the new season begins in a little over a fortnight’s time.

Manchester City face a difficult task on the opening day of the 2021/2022 Barclays FA Women’s Super League season with Taylor taking his side to Merseyside to face big spenders Everton.
