Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy admits that she is hungry for more opportunities to play in major tournaments after being part of squads which have competed in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and the Olympic Games.
The 22-year-old Londoner has already made a handful of appearances for Arsenal in European football’s top club competition while she was a member of Hege Riise’s 22-player squad which went to Japan to complete at the Olympic Games’ Women’s Football Tournament.
Wubben-Moy is now a member of new England head coach Sarina Wiegman’s first selection since she took charge of the Lionesses at the start of this month. England open their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualification campaign against North Macedonia in Southampton tomorrow night and Wubben-Moy is excited by the prospect of playing in another major tournament.
“Once you get a little taste of the possibility of playing in major tournaments like the Olympics, it just makes you hungry for more;” Wubben-Moy said. “I’m obviously young and I feel so lucky to be in this position and being able to experience these things.
“I’ve obviously had quite a few opportunities in youth age groups but when you are able to build on your experiences at senior level, you know that it is going to stand you in so much better stead when it comes to playing 90 minutes every single game further down the line.
“An Olympics was amazing, I’m hungry for more and excited for what is to come.”
The defender has two England caps to her name to date, both of which have come in friendlies played behind-closed-doors. Wubben-Moy says that it would be nice to be given the opportunity to play in-front of around 6,000 fans at St Mary’s Stadium tomorrow night.
She said “Thinking back to my debut and my second appearance, they were both played in stadiums with no fans inside. Just looking at the prospect at playing at St Mary’s with fans is so exciting but even more exciting that I could do it in a World Cup qualifier, the pedigree of that is so much higher and so much more important.
“I’m a young player but I relish the opportunity to play in big games and to take my experiences from the past and use them to help myself in the present and in the future.”
England’s opening FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier against North Macedonia at St Mary’s Stadium kicks-off at 7pm on tomorrow evening.
