Chelsea defender Magda Eriksson admitted that there were mixed emotions following last night’s 3-3 draw with VfL Wolfsburg at Kingsmeadow.
The Blues took an early lead courtesy of Sam Kerr’s chip in their opening UEFA Women’s Champions League group match but some sloppy play at the back resulted in them being 3-1 down just after half-time. Emma Hayes’ side roared back though and goals from Beth England and Pernille Harder rescued what had seemed like an unlikely point for the South West Londoners.
Speaking in the post-match press conference in which FAWSL Full-Time were present, defender Eriksson said that there were mixed emotions amongst the team after the final whistle.
“There’s definitely mixed emotions,” she said. “We felt as a team that we came out really strong and started the game exceptionally well, it feels like we played really good football today.
“We gave away some silly goals, we are well aware of that, but I think we take away the fact that we kept fighting and we managed to get back in the game, taking a point feels great at this moment.
“Other than the mistakes, it feels like we played a great game.”
Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger had a rare off-day and was involved in the mistakes which led to the VfL Wolfsburg goals. Eriksson went on to label the German as ‘the best in the world’ whilst adding that there was collective responsibility for the errors.
“It was a difficult night for the team,” Eriksson said. “We concede as a team and we score as a team.
“Ann is an exceptionally good goalkeeper, in my opinion, the best in the world so we concede as a team and we have to reduce the mistakes as a team.”
Chelsea’s attention now turns to Sunday when Leicester City are the visitors to Kingsmeadow in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
