Liverpool’s Charlotte Wardlaw said that her goal against Sheffield United this afternoon caught her by surprise.
The teenager, who is on loan from Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions Chelsea, netted the first goal as Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners against The Blades in-front of 4,100 fans at Bramall Lane.
The goal was Wardlaw’s first in senior football and after the match, she said that she wasn’t expecting to score so early in her career.
“It feels surreal,” Wardlaw told FAWSL Full-Time. “I wasn’t expecting to score any time soon because I’m always looking to provide goals. It’s pretty crazy to be honest to actually score my first goal.
“I saw the pressure on the outside of me so I thought to take a touch in. It went a bit blurry, I couldn’t see any options so I stopped on the ball, I saw there was a chance on goal and I thought I might as well hit it.”
In a game of few quality goalscoring chances, Liverpool were simply clinical with those which came their way. While Wardlaw scored a goal, her deliveries from the right also caused Sheffield United problems, something that she has been working on.
She said “We have been working on crosses, getting the bodies into the box and different runs in training.
“It is becoming second nature for the players to get the balls out wide and then be ready to attack.”
Liverpool have now won three games on their travels in the FA Women’s Championship this season. While Wardlaw is happy with the away form, she knows that stringing results together at home is equally as important.
“The result gives us great confidence going into our next away fixture,” Wardlaw said. “Hopefully, we can now start to also win games on the bounce at home.
“We are really glad to get another win and a clean sheet under our belts away from home.”
Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday when Aston Villa are the visitors to Prenton Park in the group stage of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup.
