Charlton Athletic have suffered their second defeat of the season in the FA Women’s Championship, going down 2-0 at Lewes this afternoon.

Paula Howells and Amelia Hazard got the goals for The Rookettes on what turned out to be an excellent afternoon for first team interim manager Craig Gill and a poor one for visiting boss Karen Hills.

The first half-hour was cagey and starved of quality goalscoring chances. Emma Follis was played in on goal after four minutes but home keeper Tatiana Saunders was out to defuse the danger before opposite number Eartha Cumings blocked Ini Umotong’s effort at the other end.

The deadlock was broken in the 38th minute when Howells let rip from 20 yards and the ball flew beyond Cumings and nestled in the corner of the Charlton Athletic net.

The two sides had barely got started again when Lewes made it 2-0 through a composed finish from summer signing Hazard.

Charlton Athletic came out for the second half determined to get back in the game and they put a few dangerous crosses into the Lewes box but the final touch was lacking. Howells then forced a good save from Cumings while Kiera Skeels drilled an effort into the side-netting for the visitors.

Heidi Logan struck an effort over the bar later in the half for Lewes before Umotong failed to guide the ball home from a cross in the dying minutes as the scoreline remained 2-0.

The result sees Lewes jump into the top half of the FA Women’s Championship table while Charlton Athletic remain fourth.
