Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner has confirmed that midfielder Jackie Groenen will miss this weekend’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur with a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old featured for The Netherlands in their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against  Cyprus and Belarus during the last international window but it is understood that she has returned to her club with a slight hamstring injury.

Manchester United boss Skinner confirmed the news earlier this afternoon and indicated that the club would not rush the player back into action until the time is right.

“We’ve got Jackie who has come back with a slight hamstring issue from the international period,” Skinner said when speaking in his pre-match press conference. “We are doing our assessments on her and she will be out of the game this weekend.

“We are not going to put a time on it, it could be sooner rather than later, it just depends on how she reacts to treatment.”

Groenen is a significant loss for Manchester United this weekend. She has started four of the club’s five Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures so far this season while she was used in every league game last term. The midfielder has missed just two league games in total since joining The Red Devils in summer 2019.

Victory for Manchester United at Spurs this weekend will see the club leapfrog the North Londoners into the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification places, a real incentive for Skinner’s side.
