‘It’s a marathon not a sprint’ – Spurs aiming to continue high performance levels says Skinner

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Rehanne Skinner has highlighted the importance of maintaining high standards across the whole season and not just the first five games.

Spurs have been the early season surprise package in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. The North Londoners have taken 12 points from an available 15, recording three clean sheets in the process.

Skinner’s side lost their winning record at Brighton & Hove Albion last time out and ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Manchester United at The Hive, the Spurs boss has outlined her expectation for the club to continue their good form across the campaign.

“From our side of things, we are sitting in a very good position in the league thanks to the hard work that we have put in,” Skinner said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in her pre-match press conference. “I think that it is very important that we keep doing that and take every game as it comes.

“I have said it before, it is a marathon not a sprint, there are lots of games left in the season and we are ultimately trying to pick up points in as many games as we can. This game, the next one, the one after that, whatever it is, we need to keep focusing on our performances to be able to get those results when the opportunity presents itself.”

Spurs have struggled against the top three or four sides in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League at home and have never taken a point against this weekend’s opponents Manchester United on home soil. Skinner went on to say that her side are aiming to give the fans something to shout about, which in-turn could help create an atmosphere which might make The Hive a more difficult arena for opposing sides to visit.

She added “We want to be in a position where the fans are giving us that elevation and we are giving them something to cheer for. They are then in-turn helping us be at our best and helping us make our home ground that fortress. That is something that is a work-in-progress for us to be doing that this season.

“We approach every game in the same way in terms of the principle side of things, we have to be hard to beat wherever we go no matter if that is home or away. These aspects are really key to us so the commitment levels have got to be the same consistently. We can try to make that something that is a real positive when we are on our home soil.

“Overall, we are a work-in-progress in terms of getting to the way that we want to be playing and doing that consistently. We will look to build our home form game-on-game.”
