Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Megan Walsh has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for the very first time.

The 27-year-old was born in Bromsgrove but she qualifies to represent The Girls in Green through her grandparents who originated from County Wexford.

It is understood that Walsh has been fighting with FIFA for international clearance to represent the Republic of Ireland for at least 12 months but she is now finally eligible for selection.

Speaking following today’s call up, Walsh told the FAI “It is a real honour and privilege to be called up into the Ireland squad. I was with Rianna Jarrett, Denise O’Sullivan and Megan Connolly at Brighton last year when my Irish heritage came up and things went from there.

“It has taken about 12 months to finally get here. I am excited at the opportunity to be part of the Irish Women’s Team and to work with Vera (Pauw).

“My Grandparents, on my Dad’s side, were from Enniscorthy, County Wexford, where we still have family. I know they would be so proud of me being part of the Women’s National Team.”

Walsh has previously represented England up to and including Under-23 level but she never received the senior call despite starring for teams such as Notts County, Yeovil Town and current side Brighton & Hove Albion. She will now be looking to make up for lost time in the senior international game with the Republic of Ireland as they prepare for this month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against Slovakia and Georgia.
