England forward Beth Mead is hoping for another busy evening in the opposition’s final third when the Lionesses take on Latvia at The Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Sarina Wiegman’s side have netted 33 goals in five FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifiers so far while they are yet to be breached at the other end.

England defeated Latvia 10-0 in the away fixture last month and forward Mead is hoping for another busy game in the final third in South Yorkshire on Tuesday evening.

“As a forward, you want space to be able to create opportunities,” Mead told FAWSL Full-Time in the pre-match press conference. “Against Latvia, they will have a lot of bodies behind the ball but I guess it is about us adapting our game as professional footballers.

“These are the games that you look forward to. Hopefully, we can create lots of opportunities and chances and as a striker, that is what you want when you are playing.”

Fellow forward Ellen White could grab the headlines at The Keepmoat Stadium with the player being just one goal short of equalling Kelly Smith’s record for the Lionesses. Commenting on what could be a big night for White, Mead said that her teammate is keeping very level-headed.

She said “It is a huge moment but it is funny, Ellen isn’t thinking about it that much. That shows the professional that she is, she is playing the game as she always plays it.

“She has got the quality to score lots of goals and when that happens, it will be an amazing moment for her and as a team and we will all be right behind her celebrating that moment.

“Ellen being Ellen, she is really not thinking about it much right now.”
