New Leicester City manager Lydia Bedford said that she was proud of her side for their resilience shown in the second half of last night’s 4-0 defeat at Arsenal.
Bedford took charge of The Foxes for the first time at Meadow Park and despite conceding two first half goals and having Jemma Purfield sent-off, Leicester City kept the hosts at bay until Frida Maanum struck twice in the final 10 minutes of the game.
When speaking in the post-match press conference, Bedford said that she was proud of her side for managing to cope with just 10 players for a large period of the game against the Barclays FA Women’s Super League leaders.
“Obviously, we are disappointed as you are with any game in football but I am really, really proud of the performance that the girls put in during the second half,” Bedford said. “Going down to 10 players for that amount of time, they were really resilient and worked very hard.
“We didn’t get the result in the end but I think we can take lots of positives from that.”
Leicester City’s final Barclays FA Women’s Super League game of the calendar year sees them host relegation rivals Birmingham City next weekend and Bedford went on to say that lots of preparation is being taken ahead of that monumental game.
She said “Our biggest challenge is the league and climbing the table so we will firmly have our eyes set on Birmingham as we build this week. There will be little tweaks but we have been focusing on that game for the last week.
“We are trying to build the girls’ confidence in possession of the ball which I think at times we saw in the second half today.”
