A Coventry United Crowdfunder which is aimed at raising funds for the club’s redundant players and staff has now smashed its initial target.

The campaign was set up by Coventry United fan and local fundraiser Michael Mogan MBE a week ago with the aim of raising £10,000 for those made redundant by the club and that target has now been smashed with the current total now standing at £11,874.

The fundraiser stood at around the £5,000 mark yesterday but an anonymous £5,000 donation, along with a steady flow of small donations throughout today have helped break the initial fundraising target. With donations still being made and media continuing to publicise the campaign, a revised fundraising target of £25,000 has now been set.

The Coventry United board of directors informed 24 full-time professional players and 15 members of staff of their intention to apply for voluntary liquidation on 23 December. The decision left those people out of work just two days before Christmas. With no financial or legal support available, the Crowdfunder campaign was launched in a bid to provide those made redundant with some financial backing.

A number of Coventry United’s players are now thought to be training with other clubs in a bid to keep fit while some may secure moves in the coming days with the season set to resume next weekend.
