Sunderland manager Melanie Reay has opted to offer a place in the senior squad to young forward Katy Watson according to reports on The Lady Black Cats’ official website.

Watson has gained her promotion after impressing with her performances in Sunderland’s Regional Talent Centre (RTC). The Wearside club have strong links between their senior squad and their stars of tomorrow and the academy system continues to produce quality talent just as it has done for several years.

Sunderland are currently the lowest scorers in this season’s FA Women’s Championship and while Watson will not be expected to instantly hit the goal trail, she will provide manager Reay with another attacking option following the recent departure of Dutch forward Iris Achterhof.

After being added to the senior squad, Watson said “This is an amazing opportunity which I’ve worked really hard for.

“Of course, the aim is always to be in the senior side and it’s been something I’ve tried to work towards for a while.

“I’ll work for my chances in the team and in the future, I hope to chip in with some goals.”

Watson could be included in Sunderland’s matchday squad when they travel to Birmingham City for a Vitality Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie on Sunday.
