Everton’s interim boss Chris Roberts says that the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table doesn’t lie and that he will look to improve both the team’s confidence and results during his time in charge.

The Blue Girls parted company with former boss Jean-Luc Vasseur in midweek with the club languishing in 10th position in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table.

Everton have appointed Roberts into an interim manager role and the Scot says that the immediate challenge is improving confidence and results.

“The league table certainly doesn’t lie, we are all aware of that collectively – staff, players and as a club,” Roberts said when speaking ahead of this weekend’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Reading. “The first thing I want to do is help the players to get back to what they have been playing like in previous seasons and that steady forward momentum that I have seen since I’ve been at the club. Confidence is something that we have spoken a lot about this week, getting the players playing on the front foot or in an attacking style and showcasing the reasons why they are such fantastic football players at such a fantastic club.

“This week has been big on preparation but there has been a lot on being confident and showing what we are all about. That is the way that we will climb back up the league, playing with confidence.”

Building momentum at a club which has endured such a tough season will be a big ask but Roberts went on to say that there are enough big characters in the dressing room to lift the team.

He said “We have a really good collective group, the strength of the team is in the group. We have got good individuals, big individual characters. Something that I have always been really fascinated with is how strong this group are as a unit, how well they look after each other, how well they respond to tough moments, how well they push on from good moments but always as a collective. That’s a really strong positive to have for me coming in.

“The dressing room is in such a good place with good people, top players who I know I can rely on in the games coming up. They are a really good bunch and the strength of the group is definitely that collectiveness.”

Roberts takes charge of Everton for the first time when Reading provide the opposition at Walton Hall Park on Sunday.
