Liverpool defender Niamh Fahey will make her 100th senior appearance for the Republic of Ireland when they face Poland in the quarter-finals of the Pinatar Cup on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old Galway-born centre-back made her senior debut for ‘The Girls in Green’ against Portugal at the 2007 Algarve Cup. The defender has gone on to become a key player for her national team while she has been voted the FAI Women’s International Player of the Year on no less than three occasions.
The FAI released an official press release earlier today confirming head coach Vera Pauw’s intention to field Fahey against Poland. The player has already been presented with her 100th commemorative gold cap by FAI President Gerry McAnaney and head coach Pauw. The presentation took place at the Republic of Ireland’s team hotel in La Manga, Spain.
Despite having represented the Republic of Ireland on 99 occasions at senior level, Fahey is still awaiting her first goal for her country. The fascinating element of the player’s record surrounds minutes played with Fahey having completed 85 of her 99 games in full.
After facing Poland tomorrow, Fahey and the Republic of Ireland will then take on either Hungary or Russia in the second round of games before the final tournament placings are determined on the third matchday.
