Sunderland have completed the signing of centre-back Abby Towers according to reports on The Lady Black Cats’ official website.
The 17-year-old returns home to Wearside after previously representing Sunderland in their Regional Talent Club (RTC). Towers joined FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division club Middlesbrough ahead of the 2021/2022 season and she has gained vital first team playing experience in her time with Boro.
It has today been confirmed that Towers has completed her Sunderland return and the player could go straight into manager Melanie Reay’s squad for Sunday’s rearranged FA Women’s Championship fixture against Crystal Palace at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.
After completing her Sunderland return, Towers said “It feels really good to be back. Sunderland feels like the right place for me to continue my development.
“I came here initially last year and everyone was really welcoming. I’ve played a lot with some of my new teammates like Neve Herron and Jessica Brown, who I came through with.
“I’ve seen them make their way to becoming first team regulars and that’s what I want to work towards here.”
Towers has made 18 appearances for Middlesbrough and she will now be hoping to add some appearances to her tally in the elite game with Sunderland.
