Charlton Athletic have confirmed that defender Rachel Newborough has been ruled out of action for the remainder of the season with a serious knee injury.

The Addicks confirmed the news via a post on their official club website this evening. It has been reported that Newborough has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) during a training session while the player has also sustained a low-grade strain to her Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL).

Newborough is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines and her season is over. The injury comes as a real blow for both the player and the club with Charlton Athletic currently in fine form and making real progress on the field following their switch to full-time football last summer.

Since joining Charlton Athletic in 2019, Newborough has been a regular starter for The Addicks. She has 30 FA Women’s Championship appearances to her name in a Charlton Athletic shirt. All of Newborough’s eight league starts for the South East Londoners this season have come during the first half of the campaign with the player having been named amongst the substitutes since the turn of the year.

Charlton Athletic return to action following the international break with a Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Everton at The Oakwood on Sunday.
